About Maria
Maria is an experienced financial regulatory lawyer, who approaches legal challenges with a practical attitude. While working for various companies, with different clients, colleagues and teams, and diverse legal questions, Maria, therefore, is your expert-on-demand, with a true “plug and play” mentality: Maria adapts quickly in a new environment and gets directly to the heart of the assignment.
In total, Maria, has 14 years of experience in the financial services industry. Prior to establishing Hermeneus Legal:
- Maria had worked as a lawyer for tier 1 law firms in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, advising on financial services matters and regulatory investigations. During those years Maria advised many financial companies on complex matters driven or affected by the supervision and regulation of the financial services industry.
- Maria had worked a Brussels-based lobbyist/public affairs professional representing the interests of the Dutch financial sector in Europe as well as globally. By building strategic alliances and establishing a strong professional network, she has been able to have significant influence on political decision making.
- Maria has been part of an inhouse legal team of a large Dutch asset manager. During that time the company has been in motion, due to the acquisition by a Japanese financial services group and the upcoming Brexit vote. This resulted in corresponding legal work.
- Maria founded and headed the financial regulatory practice of Deloitte Legal. The team assisted various financial institutions through the increasing complexity of financial regulation and compliance challenges. Following rapid technological developments in the financial sector, the main focus on the team has been on assisting FinTech companies, in collaboration with risk, consultancy and tax experts of Deloitte.

In her personal life Maria enjoys doing sports: kitesurfing, running and skiing. Furthermore she loves doing roadtrips on her motorcycle. But priority is given to her family and her daughter Victoria.
About Hermeneus Legal
Hermeneus Legal was founded in January 2022, and the company is specialized in financial (regulatory) law and compliance.
As classicist and lawyer, the company's name brings two passions together of Maria: interpretation and law. The ancient greek word έρμηνεύς has been the basis for hermeneutics; the theory and methodology of interpretation, especially the interpretation of literature, religious texts and law. Moreover, interpretation has always been at the center of legal thought. Understanding financial regulation also sometimes requires some help, and Maria is more than happy to assist and guide (non-) financial institutions through the increasing complexity, and offer efficient and practical solutions.
Hermeneutics are derived from Hermes, the Olympian deity in ancient Greek religion and mythology, Hermes is considered the herald of the gods, and also the most creative god. One of his most well known attributes includes the "talaria" (winged sandals). The wings are also characteristic for the company's logo.
